How much ? No Really .. what ? And other Random facts ...

So sometimes I am just blown away by random statistics.

And sometimes , I am just blown away by the seemingly random, but actually good to know little factoids that feature in my line of work.

Like the fact that there are just on 23 million small businesses in America 1-  a small business being one that employs between 0 and 20 people. I would assume 0 means it's just the owner by his lonesome doing the work, otherwise, is Casper helping out ?

This number blows my mind because I currently live in a country with a total population not far off that number. In fact the statisticians officially predicted we'd be over the 23 million mark at 9:57 pm last night . or so I am told by the news media.

And I come from a country ( South Africa) with a population just shy of double that amount - South Africa was at 51 million people as at the 2011 census. Where 12 million people in total live in Gauteng, which is the financial hub and powerhouse of the country.

And here's America , which is so big , and has so many people , that there are twice as many Small Business Owners as there are people in Gauteng.

Holy crickey smackaroos.

And this is a really good thing to know in my line of business, because I am the very blessed  recipient of a paid seat in a program offered by a really groovy company called Pyksis in conjunction with another groovy company called ANZA Technology Network . This seat, in this program gives me the chance to pick some really amazing brains over in Silicon Valley. It gives me the chance to take this super-duper exciting revolutionary cloud-software that I have been a part of creating, and find out if it's possible to sell it into the American Market.

Which it will be of course, because it's brilliant, and it's going to change the face of small business the world over.

And I am very pleased to note, that knowing there are another 23 million possible sales out there, ( factoring in that these small employers provide 66  million jobs across them ) is a really amazing thing to behold. Sort of like being at the apex of the brand new bigger than ever Roller Coaster.

Bring it on Universe! I am ready for whatever you're gonna get thrown my way. Just don't get in the way of me and my 23 million sales yeah ?

The joy of being a transplanted citizen

Yeah That ugly 'something has happened back home' experience has reared up again this week.  My mom had a fall, and has broken her wrist . It's a clean break, but a bad one, and she may need surgery.  *speechless*  So it's on the mend , and the doctors are trying something to help it heal without surgery first , she will go back in a week for more X-rays to see if it's working, and if not, then into theatre she will go.  The most frustrating part of all of this - is that there is absolutely nothing I can do . Nothing.  Helplessness is not a feeling that sits well in my Type A , fixer, doer , go-getter mentality.  Sigh.  I can let go of many things ...my family, my friends and those I love being in pain isn't usually one of them.  Human emotions are such raw things, and it constantly amazes me how they smack us down so completely whenever we feel like we have a handle on this thing called Life.

A toast to taking up a new opportunity

When you're asked to propose a toast, and there's no person that you're toasting. Well, first you panic. Then you write furiously, and then edit furiously. And then you scrap your first 2 ideas. And somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd draft of the final idea : this is what you end up with. At least on paper anyway. A couple of sentences got left out here and there to save time. But this is pretty much the toast I gave this week at my Toastmasters meeting.  I  recently met a woman online in a business women support group, who's business involves selling custom shoes online. She relayed to me the story of a Venture Capitalist who declined to invest in her company, because " women will never pay more than $500 for a pair of shoes" . She tells me that he did call her back the next day to take up the missed opportunity, after his wife educated him somewhat on the world of woman's shoes and shopping habits. It was too late however, as she had already taken investmen...

'Finishing The Race' : my toastmasters Ice breaker went well last night

Not to brag ... Oh who am I kidding, I'm bragging ;) . My Ice Breaker speech went excellently well I thought.  I prepared, practised over and over, even tweaking which stories about me I wanted to tell and how I would tell them.
