FlyScreen Door installed just in time for the holidays

Just recently had a fly screen door installed by Denis , from Denis Around the House. Denis is a self-employed handyman , focussing on the smaller jobs that people just don't get to when they are either super busy - or getting on a bit in age ( he likes to help out the elderly who need a bit of a hand with odd-jobs and a spot of gardening here and there)

Anyway - I digress somewhat from the point - which is that I realised fairly early on after immigrating* to Melbourne that flyscreens on windows, and flyscreen doors were far more important than security bars , locks or any other security measures.

Damn them flies are a nuisance !

I could swear they lie in wait by the door , and zip inside quickly in that fraction of a moment that it's open when you rush outside slamming it behind you.

Our new house came with flyscreens on every "open-able" window. We specifically asked for a security/flyscreen door on the laundry - but clean forgot to get something on the balcony door to the main bedroom.

Which has proven to be something of an unmitigated disaster with the heat we're having , and with a little curious kitty cat called Hamish , who joined our family in April of this year.

See our balcony adjoins the garage roof and wall - and it takes Hamish a small hop skip and a jump and he's on the roof of the house , and running outside . My nerves cannot handle it . Especially with the rules imposed on cat owners here in the Nanny State of Victoria.

So we finally got around to getting a screen door installed on the balcony - and oh what a pleasure it has been  these last few hot summer nights. With a cool breeze blowing in , the riff-raff of the insect world stuck outside. And Hamish , sitting at the threshold unable to stress me out in the slightest.

Denis once told me that he sells peace of mind. And you know what --- he's right.

So for anyone interested in a helping hand around the house - Denis is based in Pakenham , SouthEast of Melbourne- and will travel to pretty much most of the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Here's a copy of his business card :

Oh - and in case you missed it earlier in the post ---- I'm very happy with my screen door ....

* Here's the low down on the definitions and correct usage of immigration, emigration and migration. You emigrate FROM your old country , and you immigrate TO your new country. Migrate is the general word for people moving around , and can be used interchangeably with either immigrate or emigrate.

The joy of being a transplanted citizen

Yeah That ugly 'something has happened back home' experience has reared up again this week.  My mom had a fall, and has broken her wrist . It's a clean break, but a bad one, and she may need surgery.  *speechless*  So it's on the mend , and the doctors are trying something to help it heal without surgery first , she will go back in a week for more X-rays to see if it's working, and if not, then into theatre she will go.  The most frustrating part of all of this - is that there is absolutely nothing I can do . Nothing.  Helplessness is not a feeling that sits well in my Type A , fixer, doer , go-getter mentality.  Sigh.  I can let go of many things ...my family, my friends and those I love being in pain isn't usually one of them.  Human emotions are such raw things, and it constantly amazes me how they smack us down so completely whenever we feel like we have a handle on this thing called Life.

A toast to taking up a new opportunity

When you're asked to propose a toast, and there's no person that you're toasting. Well, first you panic. Then you write furiously, and then edit furiously. And then you scrap your first 2 ideas. And somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd draft of the final idea : this is what you end up with. At least on paper anyway. A couple of sentences got left out here and there to save time. But this is pretty much the toast I gave this week at my Toastmasters meeting.  I  recently met a woman online in a business women support group, who's business involves selling custom shoes online. She relayed to me the story of a Venture Capitalist who declined to invest in her company, because " women will never pay more than $500 for a pair of shoes" . She tells me that he did call her back the next day to take up the missed opportunity, after his wife educated him somewhat on the world of woman's shoes and shopping habits. It was too late however, as she had already taken investmen...

'Finishing The Race' : my toastmasters Ice breaker went well last night

Not to brag ... Oh who am I kidding, I'm bragging ;) . My Ice Breaker speech went excellently well I thought.  I prepared, practised over and over, even tweaking which stories about me I wanted to tell and how I would tell them.
